Click here, Planned Parenthood: Federalizing an Ideology, to read the entire analysis, or see below for a synopsis of my findings.
The nation’s foremost family planning organization, Planned Parenthood, evokes warm, all-American images for many. But for others, it provokes hard questions that demand answers: Should organizations receiving sizeable government grants be able to use that money to oppose and undermine U.S. policy around the world, particularly when these organizations stand to make a sizeable profit by doing so? Should these U.S. financed non-profit organizations be permitted to lobby the federal government for more money and/or policies that will favor their organization? In pursuit of an answer to these questions, this paper investigates the evolution of Planned Parenthood from the brainchild of founder Margaret Sanger, into a multi-million dollar organization that sways public policy around the world. We also look at some of those who oppose Planned Parenthood’s methods and ideology, and the battles that have raged between these two groups. Finally, this paper concludes that the relationship of the U.S. government with the nations largest abortion provider needs serious reassessment to see if the evolving affiliation of Title X funding and Planned Parenthood is still in the best interest of our nation, and other nations around the world.
